In his Choros, Guarnieri wrote music that conjures up the landscape and essence of Brazil. These very personal concertos reveal the composer’s refined instrumental combinations and elegant contrapuntal writing, while their dance rhythms are vivacious, drawing on the baião, maracatu and embolada. The Chorosin this second volume represent all stages of Guarnieri’s compositional development. Also included is the delightful and inventive Florde Tremembé, an early work with choro-like features. The first volume is also available on Naxos.

“…Performances throughout are thoroughly idiomatic and the four soloists genuinely seem to revel in the music. Roberto Tibiriçá guides them through it with the sureness of one who knows the scores inside and out, and the recording, made in the Sala São Paulo, is both clear and resonant.”

“… It’s truly vivacious music with a great sense of drama, while the additional Flor de Tremembé is a celebratory treat.” *****

“… Hopefully this excellent disc will chip away at the seeming indifference or ignorance regarding this composer's consistently impressive body of work. Having recorded the piano music and the six piano concerti, I would like to think that this revelatory series of recordings sponsored by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will turn to the two Guarnieri Violin Concerti or the three String Quartets. I can honestly say I have never been disappointed by any of Guarnieri's music that I have heard and I would strongly urge anyone with an interest – however fleeting – in Latin American or 20th Century concertante or symphonic music to seek out any of his works. They really are that good.”

“… These pieces, rooted in local folk music and also based on dance rhythms in a very well crafted music, are heard here alongside the piece Flor de Tremembé, an early work with chorale-like features. The Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra delivers impeccable interpretations under the inspired direction of Roberto Tibiriça.” ****
